Year of the Whale Discussion
Today in class, you participated in a group discussion about the book "The Year of the Whale". Take a few minutes to explain what you discussed in your group. Please include the subjects, questions, and predictions your group made. To receive fell credit for the assignment, please write 8-10 full and complete sentences.
During the discussion that we had in our group we talked about the problems of the stories sperm whale is having and some other problems that other whales are having like the whale that got the sword fish stock to it; this is something that could be happening to the whale that the story is following.
I believe that we need our discussion skills because the one that we had last class didn’t go to well. Also we need to understand the story better and what is happening to the whale so that we an actually discuss it better.
In our group we discussed variouse problems we bealived were worth discussing such as what our personal toughts were about the scientist and author himself. Another question brought up involved the hunters that are brought up throught the story itself. There wre also questions that involved the people tha study the whales and how how theyre techniques to study them. There wasn't much debate over our opinons because they were more connected with out opinions over a specific subject rather than a contraversial topic that would bring more opinoins and debating. Even though I bealive we did very good for our first group discussion, I beallive next time we get together and share our questions, we will allready know what is expected and and also know how we could improve our questions to benefit our learning thru questions that open our minds to more than just simple opinions.
In the recent discussion that our group had, we all talked about the various conflicts and stuggles that the baby sperm whale is going through now in the story, The Year of The Whale, such examples that the baby whale might face are being attacked my a plethora of mammals like itself during its lifetime as well as some that are inferior to it. As more and more questions were asked in our group, the more our discussion began to deminish.
We are only allowed a certain amount of information from the actual book that might leads us to alternate conclusions, with that said, our discusion as a group did not go well but this was our first time engaging in this activity, but that doesn't mean it will be like this for the rest of the year, it only means that we are getting better and mentally fit to be able to debate Mr. Hart's AP Govt. class. If we are to professionally debate them we are going to need to practice alot more and acquire new skills that will further enhance our current vocabulary.
My group discussion went well. at the beginning, we were messing around, but after a while we all joined in a discussion. In my group, we discussed the many struggles of the sperm whale. We discussed the incident that occured with the swordfish. Some agreed with the submariners eating the fish others disagreed. We also dicussed the relationship between the scientist and the whale. Some argued that the scientist cared for the whale, while others said that he just wanted his research. We also made predictions about what will happen later in the story. I predicted that the whale would be involved in a tragic accident and die. some group members disagreed. Overall, it was a good discussion.
Our group discussion started not quite well since we were just talking. Later on we started to discuss about the whales problems in the october chapter. We discuss about the swordfish that got stuck. Also about the techniques scientists uses to study whales. We didn't argue over our opinons because they were more concentrated with out opinions over a specific subject than a contraversial topic. For our first time doing this we were not letting out our opinions of our discossions. Next time we get to share our questions, we will know what is expected. Also we would know how we could improve our questions.
In our group the discussion was ok if u ask me. It may not have been the best out the class but it was interesting. Everyone had different reactions when they read the information in the section. Some people said that when they read the part about when they ate the fish that punctured the boat that it made them hungry. I thought that it was kind of sad because it was the peoples fault beacuse they were interferring with the marine life. Well to rap it up the discussion was ok and i look foward to having another one.
The discussion went pretty well. We talked about about how we would feel about different things, like whaling. If we would do anything if we saw a whale in danger. How the killing of whales affected us. About how the whales would feel if they were put in tanks at Sea World. Or captured for science experiments and research. Its pretty sad the way they use whales. It's always for capturing them of killing them.
Even though i didn't read the October reading, it kind of gave me an idea of what it was going to be about. It's pretty fascinating what a whale goes threw every day. It's always a new adventure.
our discussion went very well. at least it was better that the first time. because the first time we didn't know what to do at all. this time we talked about walling, cruelty to animals, and human encounter with whales. we all had different points of view on different things. we also talked about the difficulties that sperm whales have during life. over all our discussion went very well.
The discussion with my group went good. We all participated and shared our ideas. Some of us were against certain topics and some of us were in favor. We each gaved good ideas about why we think this way. We discussed if we were in favor of whale hunting, and about ships using the sonar. All of my group members were against this depending what they are using them for. This convrsation was fun because we got to know what other people think about what they are doing to these whales.
